Interim Associate Dean for Research and Assistant Dean for Clinical Research at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School and Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Periodontics. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Oates received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania and received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Oates is Director for the Southwest Region of the NIH-sponsored National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) and Co-Director of the South Texas Oral Health Network (STOHN). He also serves as a consultant for the Commission of Dental Accreditation and is a member of the ADA National Boards Test Construction Committee. Dr. Oates has an active faculty practice and has guided the Dental Faculty Practice as Chair of the Advisory committee since 2005
