Implant-Supported Provisional Prosthesis

When providing a patient with an implant-supported rehabilitation, clinicians must decide whether to fabricate a provisional prosthesis or go directly to the definitive prosthesis.

Several factors play a role in making the correct decision. These involve the location of the implant anterior or posterior site, the number of implants, the need to shape tissue, as is often seen with adjacent implants in the anterior area, and the need for occlusal support.

The patient’s wishes may also play a role in this decision. This module will highlight the indications, materials and techniques for fabrication and utilization of an implant-supported provisional prosthesis.

After completing this ITI Academy Module, you should be able to…

  • identify the indications for an implant-supported provisional prosthesis
  • select the appropriate type of provisional prosthesis
  • specify which materials are needed to fabricate the prosthesis
  • list the various techniques to fabricate the prosthesis
