Treating the Elderly Patient

Our steadily increasing life expectancy leads to a higher proportion of elderly persons in the society, but also in our dental practices. Nowadays patients tend to retain their natural dentition for longer which presents the dental profession increasingly often with challenging complete denture cases, characterized by signs of aging and multimorbidity.

Amongst others, the following aspects of treating elderly patients with implant-borne prostheses are addressed:

advanced ridge atrophy, lack of saliva as well as deteriorated muscle coordination
chewing efficiency and training of the chewing muscles.
dietary options and improvement of nutritional state
psychological well-being and psycho-social advantages of implant prostheses
treatment concepts
reasons for refusal of implant therapy, especially with regard to the implant surgery.
