Congress Lecture
Titanium or Ceramic Implant in the Esthetic Zone
Although titanium has been the gold standard as “the implant material of choice” for decades, recently there has been increasing demand for non-metal implant materials. Some practitioners recommend the zirconia implant in the esthetic zone claiming various advantages including a reduction in the grayish color from metal shining through the soft tissues, biocompatibility and a good soft tissue response. However, there are only a few studies on the short-term success of zirconia implants. Patient selection also plays an important role in esthetic success. This lecture will present the case selection procedure for the choice between titanium and zirconia implants in the esthetic zone. Surgical and prosthetic techniques will be discussed and the preliminary results of 3.3 zirconia implants placed in the Asian population will also be presented.
At the end of the presentation, the participant should be able to
- list the indications for one-piece ceramic implants
- describe the surgical and prosthetic techniques for one-piece ceramic implants
- compare esthetic outcomes between ceramic implants and titanium implants
