Restorative Options in the Digital Era: 3D Engineering in Implant Dentistry (Part 1)

This lecture describes various digital tools and techniques to develop clinically acceptable prosthetic outcomes. It is the first of two parts and mainly highlights data fusion techniques to generate reliable virtual patient information for guided implant surgery as well as to fabricate the implant prostheses. The content of the presentation was extracted from the textbook ‘Digital workflow in reconstructive dentistry’ authored by the speaker, ITI Fellow Wael Att. Well-illustrated comparative analysis of various scanning devices, digital workflow techniques, scan bodies used, and the digital impression accuracies provide a broader perspective for the implant clinician.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • explain different digital workflows used to plan implant placement and to fabricate implant restorations
  • describe data fusion or superimposition of different digital datasets to fabricate implant supported prostheses
  • recognize comparisons of various scanning devices and tools used in digital implant dentistry
  • appraise evidence-based literature on accuracies of different intraoral scanning techniques and devices to fabricate either short or long span or full-arch implant restorations
