Introduction to Implant Dentistry

Psychosocial Aspects of Implant Dentistry

Based on interviews of elderly edentulous patients, this lecture illustrates the consequences of ill-fitting dentures and the potential benefits of implant therapy in terms of improved self-confidence, personal well being, and social life. However, attention is also drawn to the frequent fears of older and frail patients, which may prevent them from receiving a treatment that potentially could improve their oral health-related quality of life. Finally, emphasis is put on careful patient evaluation, which can lead to a treatment plan that is a compromise between what is objectively ideal and what is individually feasible for the patient.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • recognize that edentulism and ill-fitting dentures may have a profound influence on quality of life
  • recognize the importance of individual treatment planning based on an evaluation of patient needs and capabilities
  • discuss how patient fears may exclude them from receiving the treatment that, from a clinical point of view, could improve their quality of life dramatically
