Post-Extraction Healing – Implications for Implant Treatment and Ridge Maintenance

This lecture describes the dynamics of the post-extraction socket along with changes affecting the soft and hard tissues, with a focus on the esthetic zone. The impact of these changes is critical for the decision-making process, especially in regard to the timing of implant placement and the manipulation of the healing tissues. Determinants of successful and poorer outcomes are also discussed, including a review of relevant literature and presentation of contemporary research, as illustrated by a series of clinical cases.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • describe the socket healing process
  • discuss the implications of socket healing on the timing of implant placement
  • discuss the implications of socket healing on ridge maintenance procedures
