Structured Assessment and Treatment Planning

Multimorbidity and Polypharmacy

After defining the terms comorbidity, multimorbidity, and polypharmacy, the lecturer underlines the increasing relevance of these topics for a population with changing demographics, a larger proportion of older people suffering from more chronic diseases, and an increased intake of prescribed or over-the-counter medication.

Physical or psychological disorders along with their treatment may have a profound impact on both the patient’s ability to tolerate implant treatment and on the prognosis for that treatment. Implant therapy may increase quality of life significantly in elderly patients. However, it must be preceded by a thorough medical history and must include a realistic evaluation of the patient’s ability to maintain the final prosthesis.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • discuss the importance of obtaining a complete and up-to-date medical history in elderly patients before planning any implant therapy
  • discuss the importance of creating a realistic treatment plan that takes the physical and psychological condition of the patient into consideration
