Congress Lecture
Structured Assessment and Treatment Planning
Is the Dogma of Using the Largest Diameter still Valid?
The lecture gives an overview of the existing evidence on the use of narrow-diameter implants for a well-defined range of indications based on the proceedings of the 5th ITI Consensus Conference. Prof. Al-Nawas discusses the technical complications of reducing implant diameter in the molar region and the different fracture types that may result. He also presents studies on narrow-diameter implants fabricated from titanium-zirconium alloy and makes an argument for future comparative studies on bone augmentation vs narrow-diameter implants. In addition, future potential indications are discussed.
At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to...
- describe potential clinical indications for narrow diameter-implants
- explain the different levels of evidence for mini-implants and narrow-diameter implants for different clinical indications
- recognize that placement of narrow diameter implants as an alternative to bone grafting procedures does not reduce the complexity of the treatment
