Implant Placement after Tooth Extraction – Selecting the Optimal Time

This lecture provides clinical recommendations that are consistent with the philosophy of providing a predictable long-term outcome with minimal risk to the patient. The classifications of timing of implant placement after extraction (immediately, early with soft tissue healing, early with partial bony healing, and late) are based on desired clinical outcomes. Clinical recommendations of the ITI are given, including exclusion criteria. The bulk of this presentation consists of selection criteria for each of these classifications, illustrated with clearly documented clinical cases. Although the emphasis of this lecture is implant placement in the esthetic zone, non-esthetic cases are also discussed.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • describe soft and hard tissue alterations after tooth extraction
  • classify implant placement as immediate, early, or late
  • discuss appropriate case selection for each type of implant placement
  • discuss risks and expectations after immediate implant placement
  • describe treatments to compensate for soft and hard tissue changes
