Congress Lecture
From the Bottom, from the Side, Which Side Are You on?
The congress lecture will discuss two techniques for sinus floor elevation (SFE) in implant dentistry: the lateral window technique and the transalveolar technique. Choice of method depends on anatomical considerations such as residual bone. Both methods show high implant survival rates, comparable to native bone (around 95%). Transalveolar SFE is suited for cases with enough residual bone and a flat sinus floor, but risks Schneiderian membrane perforation due to incomplete osteotomy. Advances in surgical instruments, including drills with safety ends and controlled hydraulic pressure, have reduced perforation risks in transalveolar SFE. However, for severely resorbed ridges or the presence of septa, the lateral window technique is preferred. The lecture will cover how to select the appropriate technique for each patient.
At the end of this presentation, the participants should be able to:
- determine when to use the lateral window technique and transalveolar technique
- outline how to achieve the controlled erosion of the sinus floor during the transalveolar technique
- determine the extent of the elevation of the Schneiderian membrane during the lateral window technique
