Congress Lecture
Introduction to Implant Dentistry
Contemporary Implant Designs – What Has Changed?
This presentation discusses the evolution of dental implant designs and the effects of various designs on peri-implant tissues. The biologic width around natural teeth is compared to the biologic width around implants. The main contemporary implant systems and types are discussed, and sound research is presented to explain the current understanding of dental implant components and macro designs. Butt joint, tissue level, and platform switching designs are compared, as well as external hex and internal conical implant-abutment connections. Biologic effects of different designs are presented, and clinical advice based on basic research is given at the conclusion.
At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…
- describe different types of dental implant designs
- recognize the effect of dental implant designs and components on the surrounding tissues
- explain the soft and hard tissue response to different implant designs
