Congress Lecture
Structured Assessment and Treatment Planning
Bone and Soft Tissue Changes in the Elderly
This presentation introduces and addresses the physiologic changes that occur in the oral cavity with age. Particular focus is given to the dental and periodontal tissues, oral mucosa, salivary glands, and the alveolar process (or alveolar bone). A differentiation is made between changes associated with age and those associated with pathology or therapy, particularly in regard to bone. General considerations are provided regarding treatment planning of elderly patients for dental implants.
At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…
- describe the general physiologic changes that occur in the oral cavity with age
- differentiate between physiologic changes and pathologic or therapy-induced changes
- discuss the influence these changes may have on planning for implant placement and restoration
