Abutment Design and Restorative Considerations for Esthetic Outcomes

This presentation discusses scientific evidence and clinical considerations regarding the influence of abutment design on the success and survival outcomes of implant therapy in the partially edentulous patient. The effect of different abutment materials and designs on the mechanical stability of the prosthesis is discussed, with special emphasis given to comparison of titanium-zirconia abutments and traditional titanium abutments. In addition, this lecture considers the influence of different abutment materials and designs on the aesthetic outcomes. Finally, the pros and cons of cemented vs. screw-retained restorations are presented and evaluated based on current evidence.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • recognize different materials used for abutments
  • recognize different abutment designs
  • recognize the limitations of the mechanical properties of these materials
  • discuss how the correct selection of an abutment will influence implant stability
  • explain the risk involved in cement-retained restorations
